The new frontier of tourism holidays by boat as in a hotel

Albergo Nautico Diffuso The alternative to the traditional accommodation system. The rules: navigation only during the day and within three miles from the coast

Traveling, sailing, staying. Nautical tourism of the future is called a widespread nautical hotel, between sustainability and innovation. A tourist segment with great potential on an island like Sardinia, with almost 2,000 kilometers of coastline. Assonautica, an offshoot of the Sassari Chamber of Commerce, yesterday presented the conference on 7 October at the archaeological museum at the Olbia headquarters.

Appointment to introduce the novelty of an alternative to the traditional accommodation system that focuses on accommodation on the boat, bound to the minimum number of 70 seats available, obviously on more boats. The other rules of engagement will be sailing within 3 miles of the coast and a ban on moving at night. To differentiate this service from a simple nautical charter or boat rental. The second reason for the conference is to push the regional tourism department, together with which Assonautica is developing the project, to speed up the definition of the implementing rules, in order to start operating as early as next season. The current potential is about 300 boats, which in Sardinia could be used for this type of activity, with a development that could lead to the use of between 2,000 and 4,000 boats.

Sardinia is the first region to host a nautical convention on this type of tourist proposal in the Mediterranean and aims to conquer top-tier positions, even if there are nations like Croatia that have started well in advance and today have almost 6,000 boats. destined for this accommodation offer, with the possibility in a long season from March to November to reach up to a thousand presences.

“We chose Olbia to host our first conference because it is the Sardinian capital of yachting – explains Giovanni Conoci, president of Assonautica north Sardinia -. The possibility offered by the nautical hotel is to buy a boat and increase the accommodation capacity of the area, with the cabin of a boat that is equivalent to a hotel room “. The advantages? Environmental sustainability, less consumption of the territory and the possibility of extending the offer without going through the urban constraints on the volumes in which normal accommodation facilities run into.

“Sardinia aims to be the first Mediterranean region to inaugurate this new form of tourism, with boats that will have to be used as housing units, as an alternative to a room in a residence or an apartment – explains Francesco Della Torre, operator in the sector-. Investments are important but there is also the possibility of entering the market for small operators”.

The potential also obviously concerns the related industries, with a combination of the hotel and pleasure boating sectors. “A nautical tourism that allows us to diversify the offer, always in the name of sustainability and respect for the environment – underlines Benedetto Fois, member of the chamber council and former president of Cna Gallura-. I am convinced that this new form of tourism represents a driving force for the local economy, with an important inducement for the development of companies related to the nautical and hospitality sector”.
