Destinations: Cala Petra Ruja

One of the most glittering jewels of the emerald coast, in the extreme north-east of Sardinia, famous all over the world for its nightlife, jet-set and enchanting sea.

It combines the two ‘souls’ of the Costa Smeralda, as it is glamorous and unspoilt at the same time: in fact, it is considered the ‘wildest’ beach of the iconic location on the island for elite tourism. But Petra Ruja, in the coastal area of Arzachena, also has another peculiarity, as indicated by its name, which means ‘red stone’: it is dotted with granite rocks and pebbles tending towards reddish. The beach, about 250 meters long, is set in a bay bordered by two promontories, which determine its crescent shape. The sand is white and soft, while the sea will surprise you with its transparency and iridescent shades, from light blue to turquoise, passing through the shimmering green typical of the Emerald coast.

Speaking of greenery, the entire bay is protected behind by a crown of fragrant Mediterranean vegetation, where junipers, helichrysum, sea rushes and wild radishes stand out, as well as white sea lilies. The islands of Mortorio and Soffi further embellish the landscape, which are arranged almost in an ‘axis’ in front of the beach. To the east, however, you can see Porto Rotondo and the promontory of Punta Volpe.

The beach is suitable for families with children, as the seabed is shallow, and is appreciated by snorkelers for the transparency of its waters and the presence of outcropping rocks, next to which you can observe colorful marine fauna. Beyond the promontory to the south, you will find a series of coves, which together make up the coast known as Razza di Giunco. The name is due to the plants that populate the marshy areas behind it, but its greatest charm is given by the myriad of islets, cliffs and pink granite fjords that draw a jagged coastline between the various inlets. On the opposite side, however, the largest beach of the Costa Smeralda awaits you: Liscia Ruja, 500 meters of white sand with golden and pink reflections – depending on the play of light -, caressed by a crystalline sea, whose turquoise color is among the most intense you will ever see. Many services: bars and restaurants, beach equipment and boat rental – canoes, kayaks and rafts – with which you can explore the numerous and fascinating coves scattered along the coast.
