Spargi

Spargi Island – A wild pearl of the La Maddalena Archipelago

In the north-east of Sardinia, among the wonders of the La Maddalena Archipelago, there is the Island of Spargi, a naturalistic jewel with a wild and uncontaminated character. An integral part of the La Maddalena Archipelago National Park, Spargi is perfect for those seeking pure nature, hidden coves and turquoise waters away from the summer crowds.

Wild nature and Mediterranean beauty

Spargi is an uninhabited island due to its granite and rugged morphology, with an almost circular shape and a perimeter of approximately 11 km. Covered by Mediterranean scrub and typical vegetation, it offers numerous sandy bays and spectacular coves where the sea takes on shades of green and turquoise.

The most popular beaches include:

  • Cala Corsara, with white sand dunes and breathtaking views;
  • Cala Granara, among the most beautiful coves of the archipelago;
  • Cala Conneri (also known as “Cala dell’Amore”);
  • Other hidden coves such as Cala Soraya, Cala Piscioli, Cala Pietranera and Cala d’Alga.

These beaches, all reachable only by sea, are surrounded by rocks shaped by the wind and scented scrub, offering Mediterranean panoramas of great impact.

Flora, fauna and seabed

The island is a paradise for nature lovers. The rich vegetation and the absence of tourist-seaside facilities allow you to experience an almost primitive environment. Around the coast, the seabed is ideal for snorkelling and diving, with numerous underwater attractions such as the Washington shoal and the wreck of a Roman ship from the 2nd century BC, discovered in the seabed of Cala Corsara: part of the cargo is exhibited at the Nino Lamboglia Museum in La Maddalena.

Next to Spargi there are also the small islets of Spargiotto and Spargiottello, where rare species of seabirds (such as the Corsican gull, the crested cormorant and the storm petrel) find an ideal habitat for nesting.

How to visit it

The island has no tourist services or facilities and can only be visited by sea: it can be reached by private boats, rentals or boat excursions departing from the ports of La Maddalena, Palau or Santa Teresa Gallura. Access is free, but it is a good idea to organize logistics in advance.
